The Meghalaya Medical Council was constituted by an Act — The Meghalaya Medical Council Act, 1987 which was passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and received the assent of the President of India on the 26th November, 1994 and published in the Gazette of Meghalaya Extraordinary issue dated 13th December, 1994.
The Act was amended on 5th October 2023.
The Council shall be under the control and jurisdiction of the National Medical Commission of India.
To provide for the registration of Medical (Allopathic) Practitioners in the State of Meghalaya.
To regulate the practice of Modern Scientific Medicine in the State.

A member of the council shall hold Office for a tenure of 5 (five) years from the date of his/her election or nomination.
The Council shall appoint a Registrar who shall act as Secretary of the Council and also as Treasurer, unless the Council appoints another person as Treasurer.
The Council may also appoint other persons as deemed necessary for the purpose of the Council.
